Background

As America's only nationwide, full-line, upscale department store, Bloomingdale's justifiably earns its reference "Like No Other Store in the World."

Throughout its history Bloomingdale's has been guided by an innovative retailing philosophy that pioneered nearly every major change in the evolution of department stores, from merchandise to marketing, and which continues today. With enduring recognition as a leader in unique and distinctive fashion apparel and home furnishings, Bloomingdale's is often described more as a lifestyle than as a store.

On April 17, 1872 Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale unveiled their "Great East Side Bazaar" on 56th Street in New York City. Their foresight, some 135 years ago, to open a store far from the City's retail center at the time, would prove to be the most pivotal decision for the success of the new endeavor. The neighborhood literally boomed around them; and the Bloomingdale brothers soon moved their store to its current location on 59th Street. By 1931 the store had expanded to fill the entire square block. Bloomingdale's became part of Federated Department Stores, Inc. in 1930; a year after that company was formed. Federated became Macy's, Inc. in 2007.

Bloomingdale's ventured outside Manhattan first in 1949, beginning with stores in the Metro New York tri-state area. By the mid-70's there were Bloomingdale's stores in suburban Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, DC locations. The 80's were marked by expansion beyond the northeast with units in South Florida and a Midwest flagship store in downtown Chicago. In 1996 Bloomingdale?s reached the west coast debuting four stores in California. Today, Bloomingdale's has a broad national brand presence with 39 stores in 18 major markets from coast to coast.

Since November 1991, Bloomingdale's has been led by Michael Gould, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. During his tenure, the store has seen the most accomplished and recognized period of transformation and growth in its history. Before joining Bloomingdale's, Mr. Gould was President and CEO of Giorgio Beverly Hills, and prior to that, was Chairman and CEO of Robinson's department stores.

In February 2008, Tony Spring was named president of Bloomingdale?s. Since 2005, Spring was senior executive vice president and director of stores. He began his career with the company in 1987 as an executive trainee, and went on to hold various positions in merchandising and marketing.
